Concealed Blinds: The Pros And Cons

Windows are one of the most defining elements of a home. They invite in light and fresh air, and on grey, rainy days, they provide a comforting connection to the world outside. When it comes to dressing them, we understand that you would like to preserve that view, but you might also prefer not to have your blinds on permanent display.

This is where concealed blinds step in. A sleek, innovative solution that hides the mechanism and the blind itself out of sight, so that all you see is the fabric when you want it, and nothing at all when you don’t.

At All Kinds Of Blinds, Curtains & Shutters (AKOB), we’ve noticed a growing interest in concealed blinds from both homeowners and interior designers. At AKOB we use Blindspace™ products due to their superior quality and range of options. Whether you’re looking for a minimalist finish in your home or you simply want to avoid visible hardware; concealed blinds can offer a seamless, contemporary look.

In this guide, we’ll explore exactly what concealed blinds are, their advantages, potential drawbacks, and when they might be the right choice for you.

What Are Concealed Blinds?

Concealed blinds are essentially traditional format blinds such as roller, cellular or blackout styles, that are built into a discreet recess or head/side box (pelmet). This means that the blind’s casing, brackets and roll are hidden from view when the blind is retracted. The result is a cleaner, uninterrupted look around your window or door.

They are usually integrated during a building or renovation project so that the housing becomes part of the architecture. However, they can also be retrofitted into a ceiling/sill recess or behind a custom-made pelmet.

Concealed blinds are especially popular in open-plan living spaces, with bi-fold door installations, and in contemporary homes with unusual shaped windows such as eaves or skylights.

The Pros Of Concealed Blinds

A Minimalist Finish

If you’re aiming for a clean, uncluttered look, concealed blinds are hard to beat. With all the working parts hidden, they allow your windows and walls to look clean and elegant. This is particularly appealing in modern interiors where straight lines and simplicity are key.

Pairs with Home Automation

More often than not, our clients prefer their concealed blinds to be motorised for easy control. At AKOB, we offer automation options that allow you to operate your blinds via a remote control, smartphone app, or even voice commands through smart home systems.

Protection for the Blind Mechanism

By hiding the blind’s mechanical components, you protect them from dust, damage, and general wear and tear. This can help to extend the life of your blinds, making them a practical as well as an aesthetic choice.

Enhances Large Glazed Spaces

For floor-to-ceiling windows, sliding doors, or bi-folds, standard blinds can sometimes interrupt the architectural flow. Concealed blinds tuck away neatly, keeping the focus on the view and the light, rather than on visible brackets or casings.

The Cons Of Concealed Blinds

Requires Planning

If you prefer that your blinds are completely hidden when not in use, without a pelmet, it usually requires recessing them into the ceiling or wall space. This is easiest to do during a renovation or new build, as it may involve structural adjustments. In some existing homes, there may not be enough depth above or around the window to install a concealed system without significant building work.

Higher Initial Cost

Because of the additional work involved, especially if recessing or creating custom pelmets, concealed blinds can be more expensive than standard installations. However, many of our homeowners see this as a worthwhile investment for the long-term results.

Less DIY-Friendly

Standard blinds can often be swapped out or replaced with minimal effort. Concealed systems, particularly those integrated into the building, are likely to require professional installation and servicing.

When Are Concealed Blinds The Best Choice?

  • During Renovations or New Builds
If you’re already making structural changes, it’s the perfect time to add future value to your home by incorporating a concealed blind system.
  • For Open-Plan Living and Minimalist Interiors
Concealed blinds are ideal in spaces where you want to maintain clean sight lines across multiple windows or sliding doors. If your design ethos is ‘less is more,’ the absence of visible hardware is also likely to suit your existing decor.
  • When Paired with Home Automation
Motorised concealed systems not only look sleeker but also operate at the touch of a button, meaning that they can be operated before you come home to ensure that you keep heat in during winter months, or an added layer of security if you’re staying out later than planned.

Caring For Concealed Blinds

The good news is that because much of the mechanism is hidden and protected, concealed systems often require less maintenance. For fabric care, simply follow the cleaning guidelines for your chosen material. Regular light vacuuming or gentle dusting will help keep them looking fresh.

If your concealed system is motorised, we recommend periodic checks to ensure smooth operation. At AKOB, we offer aftercare and servicing to help keep your blinds working perfectly.

Other Options

If you find that you cannot have concealed blinds, for example; the space you have is not adequate, you would prefer not to undertake extensive building work, or perhaps Blindspace™ is out of your budget; we will work with you to find a bespoke partially concealed solution. From sleek, minimalist cassettes to beautifully crafted wooden pelmets we will find the best option and finish for you.

If you have specific needs in mind, why not consider:

  • Allusion Blinds: For large sliding doors or glass walls, allusion blinds can be a great alternative. Their fabric panels combine the look of curtains with the flexibility of blinds and can also be fitted in a concealed track for a clean finish.

  • Bi-Fold & Sliding Door Blinds: A huge range of blinds can be used for bi-fold or sliding doors, including the most popular: vertical, roller and Venetian. All of which can be motorised to give that sleek, tidy aesthetic.
