How To Choose The Right Material For Your Curtains

Curtains are more than just window coverings, they frame your room, add warmth and style, and play an important role in managing light, privacy and indoor temperatures. Choosing a fabric which meets each of your key requirements, as well as considering how the curtains look, and the type of atmosphere they create, can be difficult.

At All Kinds Of Blinds, Curtains & Shutters (AKOB), we take the stress out of decision-making by offering a bespoke curtain service with a wide range of high-quality fabrics. In this blog, we’ll explore how to choose the right curtain material for your needs, based on function, look/feel, and maintenance. As always, for more information, do get in touch and one of our friendly team will be able to advise.

What Do You Want Your Curtains To Do?

Before choosing your fabric, think about what you need your curtains to achieve. Is it purely decorative, or do you want to want one of the following aspects to be a main function?

  • Block out light
  • Improve insulation
  • Reduce noise
  • Enhance privacy

Defining what the purpose is will help you to narrow down suitable fabric types; for example:

  • If you need to block out morning light in a bedroom or nursery, a decor-friendly fabric with a blackout lining is ideal.

  • In a sunny lounge with bi-fold doors, you may prefer a lighter material without a lining to soften glare but not affect brightness.

  • For draughty windows or older properties, pairing insulating materials and thick linings can help to keep warmth in.

  • If you’d like to add style then consider the type of curtain rail, curtain top, and use of tiebacks, which are coming back into style following the surge in ‘old money’ trends.

Fabric Types

Each fabric has its own texture, drape, and practical advantages. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most popular options:

Cotton

Cotton is a timeless, versatile choice. It’s soft, breathable, and works in both casual and formal settings depending on the pattern. Cotton fabrics hang neatly, and are particularly durable and easier to clean due to a higher resistance to wear and tear (ideal for family homes).

Linen

Linen is perfect if you’re looking for a relaxed, airy look. It offers a beautiful natural texture and lets in light whilst still offering some privacy. However, linen can crease easily, especially when washed, and doesn’t have the same insulating qualities as heavier fabrics.

Velvet & Velour

For a rich, luxurious feel, velvet or velour are go-to options. They are heavy and thick, making them excellent for insulation and sound absorption. Both velvet and velour drape beautifully and are ideal for bedrooms and living rooms where you want a cosy and opulent feel. Keep in mind though, that both materials require a bit more care and you may not be able to wash them at home. These fabrics are also susceptible to dust and pesky pet hair.

Sheers and Voiles

If you want to let in natural light whilst maintaining privacy during the day, sheer fabrics like voiles are a great option. These are light, floaty, and work beautifully layered with additional curtains. They’re commonly used in living areas or kitchens where privacy is required without sacrificing light flow.

Lining Options

The type of fabric you choose for your curtains will affect how much light your curtains let in. At AKOB, we can discuss enhancing your chosen fabric with different lining options, including:

  • Standard Lining: A cotton and polyester sateen, typically finished in a soft ivory with a ‘solprufe’ coating which prevents fading and sun damage. This lining will improve the drape of your curtains; creating a more substantial, fuller look from that of an unlined curtain, whilst also allowing light to pass.

  • Blackout lining: Ideal for bedrooms or living areas where you want to block out sunlight completely. This is a good option for living rooms to create atmosphere for a movie night or party.

  • Thermal lining: Adds a layer of insulation, helping to keep rooms toasty in winter and cooler in summer.

Style And Drape

Heavier materials such as velvet, velour, boucle and some cotton curtains can create a dramatic, full-length look with a defined drape. Lighter fabrics like linen or voiles create a more relaxed appearance that will flow if a window is open.

When choosing a fabric, it’s important to consider the scale of the room and the size of the windows. Larger windows or taller ceilings may benefit from heavier materials that can make a visual centre point in the space. Smaller rooms or spaces with a minimalist design may work better with lighter, softer fabrics.

  • Wave Headed: A sleek, modern finish that’s ideal for contemporary interiors. Wave headings create soft, uniform folds that glide smoothly along a specially designed track, offering a minimalist and flowing look; perfect for wide windows or full-height curtains.

  • Twin Pleat: Also known as double pinch pleat, this style provides an elegant appearance that suits a patterned fabric. The pleats are sewn in pairs at regular intervals, using more fabric and creating a fuller look that drapes beautifully.

  • Pencil Pleat: A traditional and versatile curtain heading where tightly gathered folds resemble a row of pencils. Pencil pleats suit most curtain poles and tracks and can be dressed up or down depending on fabric choice, making them a timeless option for any room.

  • Eyelet: Featuring metal rings at the top of the curtain, eyelet headings are easy to hang directly onto a pole. They create wide, even pleats for a clean and contemporary look, and are especially popular for modern living spaces and bedrooms.
